ABOUT JOHN P. COLE

John P. Cole advises individuals and organizations on risk management, employment matters, governance, and litigation.  With his own practice in Macon, Georgia, Mr. Cole handles cases ranging from personal injury to employment discrimination to estate planning. 

Prior to opening the Law Office of John P. Cole, he served as General Counsel and Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Macon State College, with responsibility for legal affairs, public relations, development and alumni affairs, and enrollment management.  Mr. Cole joined Macon State in 2007 as the Interim Dean of the School of Business.  He previously worked at Mercer University in several roles, including General Assistant to the President and Secretary of the Corporation; Vice President for University Admissions; and Vice President for Charitable and Estate Planning. 

Mr. Cole is a Georgia native and received his bachelor's degree in history from Harvard University. A 1991 magna cum laude graduate of Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law, Mr. Cole worked as an associate at the Macon law firm of Anderson, Walker & Reichert from 1991 to 1994.  Mr. Cole is a Master in the William A. Bootle American Inn of Court, a past president of the Macon Bar Association, and former chair of the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Children's Home. He is a 1999 graduate of Leadership Georgia, a trustee of Stratford Academy, and the Honorary Commander of the 5th Combat Communications Group at Robins Air Force Base.  Mr. Cole is also the founding instructor for Mercer Law School’s course on Military Law.

Mr. Cole is also a major of infantry in the Army National Guard.  In 2000 and 2001 Mr. Cole served as the Headquarters Commandant of the National Guard's 48th Infantry Brigade in Macon. The brigade deployed in 2001 for a peacekeeping rotation in Bosnia, where Mr. Cole was the 3rd Infantry Division's Headquarters Company Commander.  Mr. Cole recently rejoined the Guard and is assigned as the civil affairs officer for the 648th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade at Fort Benning.

In 2008, Mercer University Press published Footnotes to History: A Primer on the American Political Character, by former attorney general Griffin Bell.  Mr. Cole was the book’s editor and helped Judge Bell turn his speeches and essays into his final published work.

Mr. Cole is married to Mary Stewart Donovan, the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at Mercer University's School of Law. Their son Noah is a student at Stratford Academy.
